Scientists Worldwide Declare “Climate Emergency”

Recent Article Funded by Worthy Garden Club

A new article co-authored by Drs. Bill Ripple and Christopher Wolf, both of Oregon State University, warns that the Earth is in the midst of a “climate emergency.” Titled World Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency, the article was endorsed by over 11,000 scientists worldwide.

“We are very proud to have helped fund the research,” said Roger Worthington, President of the Worthy Garden Club, an Earth advocacy non-profit in Bend, Oregon. “Professor Ripple and his colleagues at OSU are leading the charge internationally to educate us that climate change is a serious problem that requires immediate action.”

The article, published on November 5th , summarizes the evidence to support the disturbing reality that, “climate change has arrived and is accelerating faster than many scientists expected.” Dr. Ripple and coauthors evaluated rising global surface temperatures along with other metrics, including freshwater supplies, marine dead zones, ruminant livestock populations, global tree cover loss, fossil fuel consumption, per capita carbon emissions, fertility rates, and more.

Ripple and coauthors concluded that the “most affluent” countries had a higher share of greenhouse gas emissions per capita and that “the climate crisis is closely linked to excessive consumption of the wealthy lifestyle.” Ripple pointed out that despite having 40 years to address the issue, humankind has essentially failed to course correct and must now take immediate action to avert the catastrophic damage that could make “large areas of Earth uninhabitable.”

Is it too late to reverse course? No. The authors outline several steps we can take to mitigate the worst of the damage. These include the reduction of fossil fuel use and more investment in renewable energy sources; restoration and protection of forest and ocean ecosystems; the transition to a more plant-based diet; and efforts to stabilize the global human population. They acknowledge that these solutions will neither be simple nor politically expedient.

In July of 2019, Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer introduced into Congress a “Climate Emergency Resolution,” which is now being co-sponsored by 80 house members and six senators. Earlier this year, Blumenauer and Ripple shared the stage at a “Warning to Humanity” lecture in Portland that was sponsored by the Worthy Garden Club.

More than 400 news organizations worldwide have covered the Climate Emergency article. It’s been reported that the article had 57 million search engine hits in the first few days of its release. “I am pleased with the attention our new article is getting and I hope it helps spur debate and action. I very much appreciate the support from the Worthy Garden Club. We will continue to rally scientists worldwide to tell it like it is,” said Professor Ripple.

The WGC is pleased to continue to support the critically important work of Dr. Ripple and his colleagues. In 2018, Ripple published “Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice,” which was originally endorsed by over 15,000 scientists worldwide and was one of the most popular science articles ever published.
